3 Ways Roof Vents Can Save you Money

3 Ways Roof Vents Can Save you Money

Though it may not seem like it from down on the ground, your roof is a structure that requires breath, similar to our lungs. This means that there must be an adequate amount of air flowing in and out of your roof, or it will “suffocate” and cause many issues. Unfortunately, the importance of ventilation within our roofs is a component often overlooked by many roofing companies. This leads to excess moisture within the attic and damages the roofing material and structure.

What are roof vents, and why are they so important for protecting our homes and wallets? A good roofer can tell you that roof vents are critical to a long and healthy life for your roof. Your roof is a structure that requires breath, similar to our lungs. This means that there must be an adequate amount of air flowing in and out of your roof, or it will “suffocate.” When there isn’t enough ventilation in our attics, especially in those hot summer months when the sun is beating down, a lack of air vents is like sitting in a hot sauna for hours upon hours, trapping hot air and humidity inside our home’s structure.

While this is going on upstairs, you might be blissfully unaware of how this is hurting your home and quietly stealing money from your pockets. Here are six ways you didn’t know roof vents can save you money.

Here are 3 ways Roof Vents can save you money on your home

1. The Heat Is Through The Roof- Or Instead, It’s Trapped There.

How To Spot It:

Seasonal basement dweller: Do you find yourself setting up temporary lodgings in the basement when that hot and sweaty July sun rolls around? No doubt you’re sick of trudging your duvet and pillow down to the spare bedroom routine or racking up your utility bill.

The Issue: Hot, moist air is getting trapped inside during the warmer months; Without roof vents, the hot air has no way out, and your house can’t cool itself fast enough. Not only is this sending you to seek refuge from the top floor, racking up your air conditioning and energy consumption, but it damages the roofing material and structure. The hot air can heat your shingles, leading them to dry out and break faster and opening your roof up to expensive leak repairs.

2. You’re Attic Smells

How To Spot It:

You're avoiding the attic—more than usual. This is a tricky one because most of us don’t spend much time in our attics and reserve it for 20-year-old boxes we keep telling ourselves to go through. That said, if every time you peep in to get that childhood memento, the musty smell of dirty socks overpowers you, this could be a bad sign.

The Issue:

That dirty wet "sock" smell could be a sign of excess moisture. You can learn a lot just by looking around your attic now and then and save yourself a headache of repairs and money later. Cue the scene from The Grudge where she slowly turns with a flashlight while peeking up into the attic… just kidding. But do bring a flashlight to check your attic for any suspicious signs such as:

  • Condensation, fogginess. Frost, rust or ice in the Winter on metal or windows
  • Moist or wet insulation
  • mould, Staining or Rotting materials such as wood, floors, or walls
  • An earthy, damp sock smell (which is concerning in and of itself, really).

Any of the above signs can also be a sign of a leak and warrant calling a roofing company to get it checked out. Please read our blog on six warning signs of a leak and why it’s crucial to seal leaks before becoming a large and expensive project.

3. Your Roof Is Looking A Little Out Of Breath.

How To Spot It:

Your shingles are dishevelled: Your Shingles have become wavy, curly or balding. Healthy shingles should lay flat with most of their sandpaper-like granules still attached. You should be able to notice if your shingles have perked up into peaks, are lifting into curls, or most of their black granules have gathered into the gutters, and they appear a little “bald” compared to your neighbours.

You can’t keep up with the exterior painting: Whether you own a new home, or it seems like just last year you had your home repainted, and you’re already noticing peeling paint on the fascia/upper trim around your house that is really annoying for one, but may be a sign of a larger issue.

The Issue:

It’s unsightly and annoying and won’t protect your exterior from staining and water damage. A lack of air vents that cause shingles and siding to peel is expensive to upkeep and does leave your roof vulnerable to leaks. Worth noting is if your roofing company offers a shingle warranty, this may potentially void it. While this can be a sign of improper installment and may be covered by warranty, you may not be protected if it’s due to excess moisture and hot air coming from inside your house. An experienced roofing contractor would know that and recommend air vents to protect your home and warranty’s longevity- read our blog post on three ways to choose a reputable roofer for your home project.

Regardless of the reason, this can be a significant clue you need to have a roofer to get to the root of your shingle’s new look.

Usually a roofing contract will recommend installing one vent for every 150-300 square feet depending on how your attic is built and your unique home needs.

As air heats up it will look for ways to rise up through cracks and openings and can eventually get trapped in your attic. Air flow that comes in your house may also push hot air through creating a flow of air. Roof vents bring the hot air out of the attic, and pull in new, cooler air through air pressure.

When choosing a roof vent type, it can be hard to decide between intake soffit, drip edge, ridge vents, static, gable, and turbine, vents. They all have different benefits whether you’re focused on price, aesthetic, keeping out critters, location on the roof, and weather conditions.
