5 Tips For Installing Vinyl Siding On Your Home

5 Tips For Installing Vinyl Siding On Your Home

Vinyl has become one of the most popular choices in siding. More than one-third of exterior cladding installed in new homes and existing ones in Canada is vinyl. Vinyl siding is quick to install, is inexpensive, durable, and simple to maintain. If you are doing some remodeling, vinyl is at the top of the list of projects with good returns on investment. Vinyl siding is sold in most hardware stores and comes with fairly complete instructions with modest tool requirements. Whether you are looking to sell your house or just want to update the exterior appearance of your home, installing vinyl can bring about many benefits. However, if the installation is not done correctly, it can make the exterior of your home look ragged and unattractive, costing you more money than anticipated.

Benefits Of Vinyl Siding

The most noticeable purpose of siding is its aesthetic appearance. The materials chosen for the exterior of your home will largely influence its overall architectural style which is why it is important to take special considerations when choosing your preferred siding.

As a building material, vinyl siding is relatively new, first introduced in the early 1950s as a replacement for aluminum siding. In the beginning, the new siding material did not perform adequately and would crack, break, and sag, tarnishing its reputation. After ongoing advancements in the product's chemistry and installation process, vinyl has significantly improved its performance and is one of the main siding materials used by builders and homeowners.

Some of the many benefits of vinyl siding include:

  • Painting is not required
  • Inexpensive
  • Extremely durable
  • Low maintenance
  • Easy to install
  • Adds curb appeal to your home

Get the details right the first time by following these tips and tricks for installing vinyl siding on your home so you can save yourself time and hours of frustration later on.

Use A Wide Starter Strip

Most suppliers sell two sizes of starter strips; 2 ½ inches and 3 ½ inches. Most individuals make the mistake of purchasing the 2 ½ inch starter strip because it is less expensive. The bottom of a starter strip must be at least one inch below the start of your foundation, but the more coverage, the better. This can be achieved with the wider 3 ½ inch starter strips. Wider starter strips will cover more of your home's foundation which will offer extra protection against pests, rain, hail, and anything else nature throws at it.

Carefully Level It Out

Correctly installed vinyl siding must be carefully leveled out from the beginning. If the vinyl is not level, you risk having to re-do all of your hard work from the beginning. Not only will the siding function better if it is properly leveled, but it will also be much easier to install and will look much more aesthetically pleasing. Snap a level chalk line around the base of your home where the first siding pieces will go. After, make sure to check the level of each panel as you go to ensure you are not installing the panels at a slant.

Leave Space On The Ends

Vinyl siding can expand in the summer months and then contract when it is colder out. To accommodate these adjustments, remember to cut a ¼ inch of extra space on both ends of your siding runs. This will allow room for the panels to contract and expand without causing damage such as buckling and other costly problems.

Install Longer Panels First

Longer panels do not stretch out as readily as smaller cuts, so they will not easily adjust if they are not level. When installing vinyl siding near a window or door, start with the side that needs longer panels.  Before you install the last few pieces on the smaller cut side, measure up to the top of the window to make sure both sides are at the same height.

Use A Vinyl Blade

Vinyl blades arrange the teeth backwards to allow for a more precise, smooth cut for the vinyl panels. Standard fine-tooth saws will cause chipping and other issues resulting in wasted materials and money. These blades are cheap and can be found at your local hardware store.
