DIY Roof Inspection: Checking For Winter Damage

DIY Roof Inspection: Checking For Winter Damage

As the winter weather calms down and slowly turns to spring, it’s time to check on your house and assess any potential winter damage. Winter in Calgary can often cause roofing damage such as ice dams which can lead to loose shingles, issues in the soffits and fascia, and leaks. Other damages may be caused by high winds, hail, impact, or even the age of your roof and gutters. As you head into spring and the snowmelt and rain it brings, make sure your roof can withstand the weather and that any leaks in the home are caught now instead of after the onslaught of moisture in the coming months.

4 Ways To Check For Roof Damage

1. Check Inside. Inspect along the floors, walls, and ceilings for any damp or discoloured areas. Also search for any cracked plaster, as this can be a sign of water leaking in the walls.

2. Examine Your Roof Outside. Start by checking your roof from a distance to ensure the slope on both sides is even and that no sections are buckling inward. Check that there are no missing or cracked shingles and that the colouration on the shingles is all the same, as shingles missing granules and appearing a different colour have likely been damaged by hail. Also check for dents from hail. If you notice larger damages to the roof, such as deformations or objects on-site (such as trees or satellites), do not attempt to remove these or otherwise try to fix the situation on your own. Instead, call a professional. Trying to fix large roofing issues by yourself can lead to more damage and can also lead to injury.

3. Look At The Gutters. After you’ve checked the roof at a distance, it’s time to get closer. Check inside your gutters by getting on a ladder with someone else holding it by the base. Look into the gutter to see if there is any debris blocking the flow of water, such as twigs, dead leaves, and other objects. These objects can be removed by hand. If your gutters are suffering issues caused by ice dams or if the joints of the gutter are rusted or have holes, call a professional. If your gutters have freezing related to ice dams, an attempt to fix the problem yourself may further damage your roof, as ice dams can go deceptively far into the roofline.

4. Call An Expert. Sometimes you find issues with your roof that need professional attention, other times you may not want to or are not able to inspect your roof yourself. There are many reasons a person might want to call a professional to inspect their roof for them: poor eyesight may limit you from seeing the extent of damage from a distance, you may not be comfortable going up a ladder, you may not be confident what damages you’re looking for, or your roof is several years old and you suspect it may need replacing soon. Whatever the reason, calling an expert is the safest way to know the condition of your roof.

Roof Inspection FAQs

You likely won’t be able to tell if you need a roof installation from looking at it, but the experienced team at Asonic Roofing can inspect your roof and let you know if you need only a repair or a full replacement. Typically, this is determined by the age of the roof or the extent of any damage it has suffered.

Depending on the material, roofs last from 20 years to 100 years or more. Asphalt roofs are the least durable and tiled and slate roofs are the longest lasting. Metal roofs are somewhere in between.
